PASIGHAT, Apr 15: The most joyful spring festival ‘Bohag Bihu’ of the Assameese community brings a sense of solidarity and unity and is celebrated with fun and abundance. This is a festival of merriment and also known as Rangali Bihu. The first day is known as Goru Bihu and reserved for cattle rites. Household cattle are bathed with turmeric, fed with gourds, brinjals and provided new attaching ropes and decorated with garlands. People put on new clothes and special cuisine are prepared at home for feasts. People visit their friends and relatives with Pithas and gifts.
On the first day of Baishak (April 14), Asomiya community also took off to a colourful start at Pasighat to reinstall the feeling of belongingness in the land away from home assembling at the Pasighat Namghar. The day long function was inaugurated by the local MLA Bosiram Siram.
On the auspicious occasion, Siram said Arunachal Pradesh is a land of festivals while extending his best wishes and greetings to the people for bumper harvesting and prosperous life. He said we must preserve our rich culture and follow our traditions and rituals for a better, peaceful, healthy and prosperous tomorrow.
Earlier, Dr. B.C. Sarma DDHS welcomed the guests and spoke about Bihu. Among other senior citizen and prominent writer Oshong Ering (Rtd. IAS), Sakuntala Moyong, Jungkang Jamoh also attended and spoke on the occasion. (H K Roy)
