Landslide in Tibet puts East Siang district administration on alert

ITANAGAR, Apr 29: Unprecedented flood looms large at East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh in wake of reported formation of an artificial reservoir at Tsangpo River in Tibet following a massive blockade due to landslide on Monday.

According to reports, people in the district as well as in Jonai sub-division under Dhemaji district of nearby Assam were under fear psychosis with apprehension of flood in the area as the mound could breach at any point of time.

While the people of the district were apprehending a similar situation like June 2000 flash flood, the administration was in preparedness to face any eventuality.

“We have directed the Water Resource Department to constantly monitor the situation and inform us in advance if there is any possibility of breach of the blockade”, East Siang deputy commissioner Onit Panyang told UNI.

He said the thickness of the mound was around 49 meters and the length of the reservoir was less than half a kilometer. “Even in case of any breach, the discharge of water from the reservoir would be less and the magnitude of flood would be minimal”, he added.

Tsangpo River flows from Tibet and enters Arunachal through Gelling in Upper Siang district. In Arunachal the river is known as Siang and later on reaching Assam it is known as Brahmaputra.
